Dark Future
By Christopher P Bartlett
This is a mini-series idea, based upon the Games Workshop Dark Future game,
released in the 1980s. This was one of the first GW games I played, and as I
managed to get hold of a copy on eBay last summer, I was hit by the inspiration to try
to write a screenplay based in this world. If you have seen Mad Max, then you can
easily make the post-apocalyptic jump. At the moment, this project is very much in
the planning stages, but if I write some good scenes, I might get round to posting
them here. For the time being, I'll put down what I have so far.

The Call of the Open Road - Draft

TEASER:
BLOOD ON THE HIGHWAY
T.1 Montage: Pictures/Video

NEWSCASTER:
In the vast tracts of lawlessness outside the Policed Zones, motorised gangs reign supreme. The
roads have become a battle zone, where the slow and the weak soon die. What else is left but
rebellion and a brief stab at notorious glory? Nothing.

Life here’s not good. It’s fast and it’s cheap, and it has a tendency to turn real dangerous when you
least expect it. But for the right people the rewards are immense. Think about it.
Someone, somewhere, must be profiting from all the chaos.

The Enderby Amendment opened up the field of law enforcement to private individuals and
organisations. The Sanctioned Operative was born.
Ops. A new breed of law enforcer. A blend of bounty hunter, hired gun and old-style fighter pilot.
They cruise the interstates in their heavily-armed Interceptors on a perpetual seek-and-destroy
mission. Sometimes they’re chasing bounties put up by the authorities. Sometimes they’re hired by a
community to defend it from predatory gangs.
It’s all money.

It’s a dangerous business, and one that attracts all kinds.
Some like the money, some like the danger.
Some just like the killing.

T.2 EXT: The open road
Three Renegade vehicles are thundering down a lonely highway, surrounded by blighted desert. Two
are driving side by side, taking up both lanes. The third is heading straight down the middle.
Still at some distance, a fourth vehicle, a family camper van is trundling away from them.

RED:
Shouting across through the open cockpit
Hey, Gino. Is that all you’ve got?

GINO:
Thought I’d give you a chance Red.
RED MACLEAN snarls and guns his Renegade, pulling slightly ahead of GINO CARPENTER. GINO
returns the gesture and hits his fuel injection, accelerating ahead of RED. The two cars struggle to stay
in front, still unaware of the camper van ahead of them.
Finally they reach the top of a rise, leaving the ground as they do so. Suddenly the camper comes into
view.

RED:
Gino, looks like we’ve got ourselves some better sport.

GINO:
Lead the way boss.
The three Renegades close the distance rapidly, while the driver of the camper tries desperately to
gain speed. They are easily outpaced. RED’s lead Renegade approaches within a few dozen yards of
the camper, nestling in behind it.

RED:
Let’s see how they like a taste of the old MG.
RED thumbs a trigger on his steering wheel, grinning as the twin-linked machine guns on his
renegade erupt in an arc of flame. Bullets rip through the rear of the camper, causing the driver to
swerve violently. Finally, a projectile bursts the rear left tyre. The driver panics, spins and rolls, the
camper finally coming to a rest off the road on its roof.
RED and the other Renegades continue past, admiring their handiwork. Eventually they slow down
and return to the scene.  Stopping a few yards from the camper, RED and GINO jump out, while
DEVON covers them with his machine gun.
RED and GINO scout around the upturned camper, pistols drawn. Looking inside, GINO is met by a
bloody mess of an undetermined number of bodies. A few stir, but GINO ignores them.

GINO:
Hoowee, you sure kicked their asses, boss.
RED holds a hand up for GINO to be silent. He peers round the corner of the camper, and sees a trail
of blood leading away from it. GINO watches while RED creeps after the trail. It leads over a low rise to
a large cactus bush. RED sneaks up stealthily, before leaping out at the owner of the blood. A middle
aged man in a HAWAIIAN SHIRT looks up pitifully at RED, clutching a bloody hole in his stomach.

HAWAIIAN SHIRT:
Please - my family… Where is my family?
RED turns back to GINO and the camper. His colleague is already wading through the blood-stained
interior looking for anything he might salvage. RED shakes his head solemnly, cocking his pistol.

RED:
Sorry mister, ‘fraid they’re dead. But don’t worry. Lowers his pistol. You can give them my regards real
soon.
