Scene One Tuesday morning. The second day of the new term, people have reacquainted themselves with people they haven’t seen for a while. The atmosphere is relaxed, people talk easily and have no worries. It seems to be a time of new beginnings and fresh chances.
Chemistry Class, ELY and SHAUN sit in front with JEN, MARIE, TERRI and NICKY behind. The teacher has not arrived, so they are chatting freely.
SHAUN: Man, there isn’t a better cook than your mom in the whole of Philly. Mm mm, that was damn good yesterday.
ELY: I’ll tell her you said so. Anyone’s welcome at my place.
MARIE: Does that apply to everyone?
ELY: Yeah I guess that could include you as well Marie. Why, do you wanna come over?
MARIE: I wouldn’t want to intrude.
ELY: No, I’d be happy to have anyone over. He looks at JEN
JEN: Is that an offer Ely?
ELY: It might be, you never know.
SHAUN: Quietly to ELY It makes me sick.
ELY: What does Shaun?
SHAUN: You and your la-de-da talking to Jen. You wanna be any more obvious. Just ask her out you loser!
ELY: All in good time Shaun. I don’t have to move that quickly, there’s still plenty of time left.
MARIE: What’s that you two are talking about? Something secret?
SHAUN: Oh nothing, just you know, chatting. SHAUN and MARIE begin their own conversation, JEN turns to ELY
JEN: Hey Ely, thanks again for walking me home yesterday, you wanna do it again today?
ELY: You know I would like to, but I’ve got football practice. It’s the first of the year, so I’ve really got to go.
JEN: That’s okay Ely. I can always walk home by myself.
ELY: I can’t let you do that Jen. Tell you what, why don’t you stay to watch, then we can walk back together afterwards. How’s that sound?
JEN: I don’t know, what time does it finish?
ELY: Four thirty, do you think you can take watching us for that long?
JEN: Yeah I guess I could.
ELY: Cool then. What lesson have you got last?
JEN: Math class, I think. Well, we’ll be there together anyway.
ELY: Good point. You really are something y’know.
JEN: Why thank you Ely.
ELY: Anytime Jen. Say, have you got any plans for lunch?
JEN: Why, have you got something in mind?
ELY: How’s about we have lunch together? Me and you, we can have a good talk about anything.
JEN: Sounds good.
ELY: I’ll be buying of course.
JEN: The real gentleman, what a find.
ELY: And you’ve only just discovered that?
JEN: Modest too.
ELY: Are you mocking me, coz I don’t think that’s fair. I don’t know, you try to be courteous and you get laughed at, what is the world coming to?
JEN: Oh I’m sorry Ely, I didn’t mean it. I’d like to have lunch with you. I like a bit of Indian food.
ELY: Hey Jen, this is the cafeteria, it’s barely even food. If you want a special meal, well, maybe I can cook you one someday.
JEN: You cook Indian-style do you?
ELY: Okay, so I don’t but if you wanted to I could try.
JEN: No there’s no need to do that, the cafeteria will be fine.
SHAUN: What’s that about the cafeteria?
ELY: I’m gonna have lunch with Jen today, okay big guy?
SHAUN: Oh yeah, fine with me.
ELY: Well okay then. You can cope with eating alone then?
SHAUN: Yeah, I’ll be able to find someone else to eat with. Who knows, maybe I’ll even eat with Rosie, that should be good for a laugh.
ELY: Why d’you have to be so mean to her? Why can’t you just be nice to her once in a while?
SHAUN: I am, she just takes things far too seriously.
ELY: Maybe, but you should at least respect her feelings, you know how she feels about you.
SHAUN: Okay, I’ll make some kind of effort.
ELY: Okay then. Teacher walks in It looks like it’s time to start learning. Fun huh? He turns round, smiling at JEN as he does so
JEN: Lunch then Ely.
ELY: Wouldn’t miss it for the world.
TEACHER: Okay class, settle down please. The class falls silent
